If you’re craving the freshest fish, clams, crab, shrimp and oysters from local North Carolina waters, you’ll find them at the Lone Cedar Café. The Cotton Gin

For those traveling to the Outer Banks, The Cotton Gin is a beloved landmark with its large windmill and picturesque gardens. The Cotton Gin has stood in the same location since 1929, starting as a working cotton gin and growing to a gift store with 4 locations. Visitors are treated to a unique shopping experience in our main store in Jarvisburg, as well as our beach stores in Corolla, Duck, and Nags Head. Explore room after room filled with décor for your home and coastal fashions for both men and women. Discover the brands you really want, like, Vera Bradley, Vineyard Vines, La Mer Luex, Simply Southern, Lindsay Phillips, Scout, Pandora, Kameleon, Brighton, Spartina, Tommy Bahama, Southern Tide and Salt Life and Old Guys Rule - all under one roof!   Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.   Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.   Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.   “As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.

The shop manager likes to describe this cool store as “the most fun place on the beach.” That might be pushing it, but it’s definitely one of those stores that make you smile and want to take something home. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Plus, there’s lots of playful and colorful housewares and beach-y décor --- mirrors, lamps, shell decorations, art, candles, picture frames. There are even troll beads and charms in stock. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.

Outer Banks food fans who are stocking up on the groceries they will need for a great vacation will find plenty of goodies and then some with a visit to The Fresh Market in Nags Head. Centrally located and featuring all of the staples and more, this unique grocery store with a focus on fresh flavors is an elevated destination for unique ingredients and to-go meals that can’t be found anywhere else.

Smell it and you will definitely want to buy it. So of course, the exquisite aroma wafts outside, and by the time people come into the store, their resistance to this homemade fudge is pretty weak.  The free samples the staff offer pretty much seals the deal. Made right before your eyes, this creamy fudge comes in numerous mouth watering flavors, including peanut butter, maple nut, rocky road and of course, chocolate.  Started in 1980 on the Outer Banks, The Fudgery now has about 27 stores located in 15 states. The business caught on not only because of its fresh ingredients, but because customers could watch the scrumptious confection being cooked and hand-turned on marble slabs into loaves. Plus, if customers were lucky, the candy maker would sing for them while he worked. (Really!) The store also sells homemade caramel apples, so how can anyone resist? There are also dessert toppings in jars based on the same recipe in three flavors: chocolate, chocolate mint and amaretto. And if you want more when you get home, you can order the fudge, dessert toppings and candy apples from The Fudgery’s online store.

The Gift Garden has one of the largest selections of Tervis on the Outer Banks. We carry Yankee Candle and Country Candle products and candle gifts, as well as OBX t-shirts, souvenirs and gifts, premium home flags, and nautical and home décor. We have bath and body lotions and soaps made in North Carolina, and a great selection of North Carolina jams and jellies, sauces and peanuts. And for the sweet treats . . . Nostalgic candy and sodas and salt water taffy.

No shopping trip with the kids is complete without a trip to a toy store, and The Kid’s Store in the Waterfront Shops in Duck is the perfect spot to find everything for children. A classy gift shop with something for everyone.

A little shop with lots of heart, The Music Store has been serving musicians and students in the Outer Banks area for over a quarter century.  Current owner Betsey Paulsen and her husband Mike, who once played with Eagles’ Joe Walsh, started the store as a family business 27 years ago. Though they moved a few times and Betsey ended up on her own for a while after Mike passed away, the shop remains a family operation with the couple’s sons now part of the team.Betsey is not just a business owner, her family is a vital part of the Outer Banks community, providing instrument rentals to all Dare County Schools, as well as a retail store for professionals and amateur musicians. And if she doesn’t have what you need on hand, she’ll order it.Not only that, she leaves her contact number on the door when the shop is closed, promising to meet you at for any emergency, which can often happen with kids’ performances. 30 YEARS IN THE MAKING. Since the beginning, the Weeping Radish has brewed beer according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516 which states that beer must be brewed using only four ingredients: Hops, Malt, Yeast and Water. No additives, chemicals or preservatives may be used. Uli Bennewitz came to North Carolina in the early-1980s and decided to open a microbrewery similar to the ones he’d left behind in Bavaria.
