So many simple pleasures await you in The Weathervane. Wake to the beautiful sunrise and pounding surf. Step out on the deck with that first cup of coffee. Touch the moon glade just steps from your front door. This is Relaxation!!

Be among the first guests to use the outdoor telescope in this lovely semi-oceanfront (2nd row) home, situated in a very quiet section of the 4x4 beach. Located just 7 miles north of the end of the hard road and nestled between two wildlife preserves, your shoulders will drop as soon as you pull in. The serenity on this part of the beach is amazing. Watch the breakers from the nicely stocked kitchen in this reverse floor plan home. You may even see some brown pelicans fly by as you sip your coffee. Spend your morning on the screened in porch watching the wild horses. You may also spot foxes, bunnies, deer or black hogs. (They are here but are elusive!) Wildlife abounds on the beach as well with all kinds of bird and fish, shellfish and mollusks. Shelling is a favorite pastime, not to mention fishing and swimming. Leashed pets are allowed on the beach so you can bring your dog and enjoy the day. Setting up is easy since you will be able to take your gear to the beach in your car. You can even park on the beach and use it as a base of operation. Two beach parking passes are provided for guest use... so no extra expense with our homes!! Forgot something? … no worries, since the house is just steps away.

Everything is better at the beach, including sleeping! Two of the three bedrooms have memory foam queen beds, flat screen smart tv’s and private access to the second level deck. The third bedroom has a flat screen smart tv and a duo-bunk bed (double bed lower and twin bed upper, also memory foam). This home has plenty of room for a small family, but will also suit for a couple who just need to get away from it all.

If you are not familiar with Carova Beach, you will be enchanted with the excitement of driving on the beach, witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat and being separated from the masses. Or maybe you already know how exhilarating it is to wake up to the pounding surf, neighing horses and the prospect of another beautiful day on the beach. It is the experience of a lifetime… make it even more special with a relaxing stay at Weathervane.
You must have a "four wheel drive” ( 4x4 ) vehicle to access this home.

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar

Welcome to the home of the happy oyster where for over 40 years the oyster has been our world. The Outer Banks only authentic oyster bar is the place to enjoy sensational fare from the sea washed down with your favorite brew or cocktail. We serve by the peck, pound, and dozen, raw or steamed to perfection. Kicked back casual, down to earth friendly staff, and reasonable prices make Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar the all-time favorite of locals and travelers alike.

The idea wasn’t to set out and establish a new concept restaurant on the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what Awful Arthur’s owner Jo Whitehead and her late husband, Jay, accomplished more than 35 years ago when they opened the area’s first authentic oyster bar.

Awful Arthur’s opened in May 1984 on the Outer Banks. “We embraced the concept of an authentic copper top bar with the idea of it being a major drawing card and it still is,” explains Whitehead. “I get oysters wherever they are local. We follow the warm waters.”

Just across from the ocean, in Kill Devil Hills, oyster season is year-round at Awful Arthur’s. Diners can take a seat at the copper-topped bar to observe the staff shucking oysters, served raw or steamed, along with shrimp, crab legs and clams all steamed to perfection.

It’s not just the raw bar that’s earned Awful Arthur’s both local and national recognition, including being named one of America’s greatest oyster bars by Coastal Living magazine. The restaurant is a seafood-lover’s paradise, offering the freshest catches available.
