The lower level boasts an entertainment space with a pool table, TV area with seating, and a kitchenette including a sink and full-sized refrigerator. Each of the two bedrooms has two twin bunks, a Roku Smart TV, and access to a full bath (one private and one shared).

A slider from the rec room leads to the hot tub and pool area that includes both an enclosed outdoor shower and additional half bath. A private walkway from the pool area leads up to a dune deck with seating and straight out to the beach. There is a second outdoor shower with foot wash at the base of the walkway.

First Floor

In the center of the middle level, you will find a media room with plenty of cozy seating and a wall of windows with amazing views of the ocean. A king bedroom suite is on one side of the floor and includes a private bath with a Jacuzzi tub and private deck with ocean views. Two additional king bedrooms with private baths complete the level. One of these has ocean views and access to a covered deck. All three bedrooms include Roku Smart TVs.

The great room and dining area on the top floor feature large east-facing windows and sliding doors that provide stunning, unobstructed ocean views. Guests can use their own logins to access streaming services on the 58'' Roku Smart TV while enjoying the large but cozy sectional sofa and additional seating in the great room. The oversized farmhouse table has seating for the entire family while looking out over the Atlantic. The main deck can be accessed from either room and includes counter-height tables and chairs.

The fully stocked kitchen includes everything needed for large or small family meals and additional seating at the counter provides more space to entertain or for a quick snack. Coffee lovers in the group will find a Keurig and a standard drip coffee maker in the kitchen. Two dishwashers help when cleaning up after large family meals. West-facing windows in the kitchen and open stairwell allow light to cascade through the large open space throughout the day.

The main king bedroom suite completes the upper level featuring a vaulted ceiling, a private bath with a Jacuzzi tub, private deck access, and TV with cable access.

Updates for 2025: All new ocean-facing decks, updates to the front entry steps, ground level kitchenette completely remodeled with new appliances, and new washer and dryer. The deck stairs from the first floor (middle level) to the pool area and the fencing around the hot tub were removed and pool alarms were installed on the two ground floor sliders that open to the pool deck. New photos to come.

Updates for 2024: Complete kitchen remodel with revised layout, new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and backsplash; new great room, dining room, and kitchen furniture; new bedding, curtains, mirrors, light fixtures, hardware, accessories, artwork, and decor pieces throughout; fresh interior paint throughout, including great room cabinets; stairs upgraded to LVT; TVs added to ground floor bedrooms (TVs in five of the six bedrooms and the great room have been upgraded to Smart TVs); new front porch, entry steps, and door; all new siding; new pool liner; enclosed outdoor shower (replaced tiki bar); new lounge chairs by the pool; new table and chairs on the second floor southeast deck; new Adirondack rope chairs on the second floor northeast deck; updated landscaping.

Pool: Pool heated by heat pump. Ambient air temperature of 60 degrees or higher is needed to heat the pool, meaning that if the temperature drops below 60 degrees the pump will not continue to heat. Max pool temperature is 80 degrees.

TVs: The great room and five of the six bedrooms have Roku Smart TVs with streaming capability and cable access via the Spectrum app. The second floor king bedroom, the first floor media room, and the ground floor rec room have TVs with cable access via Spectrum cable boxes.

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar

Welcome to the home of the happy oyster where for over 40 years the oyster has been our world. The Outer Banks only authentic oyster bar is the place to enjoy sensational fare from the sea washed down with your favorite brew or cocktail. We serve by the peck, pound, and dozen, raw or steamed to perfection. Kicked back casual, down to earth friendly staff, and reasonable prices make Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar the all-time favorite of locals and travelers alike.

The idea wasn’t to set out and establish a new concept restaurant on the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what Awful Arthur’s owner Jo Whitehead and her late husband, Jay, accomplished more than 35 years ago when they opened the area’s first authentic oyster bar.

 

Awful Arthur’s opened in May 1984 on the Outer Banks. “We embraced the concept of an authentic copper top bar with the idea of it being a major drawing card and it still is,” explains Whitehead. “I get oysters wherever they are local. We follow the warm waters.” 

 

Just across from the ocean, in Kill Devil Hills, oyster season is year-round at Awful Arthur’s. Diners can take a seat at the copper-topped bar to observe the staff shucking oysters, served raw or steamed, along with shrimp, crab legs and clams all steamed to perfection. 

 

It’s not just the raw bar that’s earned Awful Arthur’s both local and national recognition, including being named one of America’s greatest oyster bars by Coastal Living magazine. The restaurant is a seafood-lover’s paradise, offering the freshest catches available.
