The ground floor opens to a recreation room where friendly competition is the name of the game! There are options for everyone, so be prepared to match wit and skill at the pool table, foosball table or ping pong table and then try your luck at the casino table. A sectional sofa with chaise lounge and flat screen TV are the center pieces of the sitting area, which offers a kitchenette with sink, microwave and full refrigerator for snack and drink storage. A half bathroom and laundry facilities are centrally located. Bedding options include three bedrooms with flat screen TVs and private bathrooms. One is furnished with a queen bed, the second offers two twin beds, and the third is equipped with a pyramid bunk.

Doors lead from the rec room to a nice selection of outdoor amenities. Start and end each day in the sparkling private pool with an adjacent kiddie pool to keep the little ones nearby. Lounge poolside to soak in revitalizing rays or enjoy a respite from the sun on the pool lounge deck under shaded pergola. Plan casual outdoor lunches at the grill center under pergola, offering guests a gas grill and counter space.

An elevator opens to the first floor, which is dedicated to five bedrooms, each with flat screen TVs, and private baths. Two are furnished with king size beds, two provide queen size beds and a bunk suite is equipped with two twin bunks. A central media room features sofa seating, big screen TV, surround sound, a microwave and mini refrigerator. Laundry facilities are conveniently located on this floor. An expansive wraparound covered deck overlooks the pool area and sandy volleyball court.

The second floor great room is spacious and designed for entertaining. A comfortable living area features sofa seating, arm chairs, 60" flat screen TV and seasonal gas fireplace. A half bathroom is centrally located. Doors open to a furnished rear sun deck, and the front balcony offers ocean views. Stairs lead to two private loft retreats, one is furnished with a casino table and the second is a sitting area with chair and TV for gaming system hook up only (gaming systems not provided).

A large kitchen overlooks the great room and offers tile floors, granite countertops and a center island. Appliances include two full refrigerators, range, double ovens, microwave, two dishwashers, Keurig, single brew coffee maker, regular coffee maker, and crock pot. Meals can be served at a dining table that seats fourteen guests or at the kitchen bar with casual seating for eight. The top level is completed by two bedrooms with private bathrooms, each furnished with a king size bed and flat screen TV.

Pool: Heated by heat pump. Ambient air temperature of 60 degrees or higher is needed to heat the pool, meaning that if the temperature drops below 60 degrees the pump will not continue to heat. Max pool temperature is 80 degrees.

Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

 

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

 

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

 

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

 

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

 

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

 

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
