Whalehead Paint in the Park

From wealthy hunters in the 1920s to the birth of the first English child on American soil, the book is a collection of letters, poems, news stories, and other sources that puts the different chapters of life on the Outer Banks into perspective. Learn about the heroic efforts the US Lifesaving Service and the modern day Coast Guard during this fascinating series of weekly talks in July that are led by Commander Carl Smith (retired) of the U.S. Coast Guard. During these fascinating and informative talks, visitors will hear all about the incredible rescue of crew members from the 1918 British tanker, the Mirlo, and how everyday heroes continue to perform historic rescues using modern day equipment. With more than 30 years of active duty experience, Commander Smith is an expert in his field and was involved in more than 1,300 search and rescues during his military career. Engaging throughout, this session will shed new light on the brave men who saved lives all along the Outer Banks.

38th Annual Wright Kite Festival


Head to the flagship Kitty Hawk Kites store in Nags Head and / or the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, and spend a day enjoying the wind and weather of the tallest sand dune system on the East Coast. Family Magic Show


The inviting Duck Town Park Amphitheater serves as the perfect venue for a morning of kid-friendly entertainment that’s free for all visitors (although tickets are required.) Grab a seat on the line of wooden benches, and be amazed as OBXtreme Magic with world-renowned illusionist Clive Allen performs a stunning array of feats that will have guests laughing, smiling, and watching with their jaws dropped. From incredible mind-bending illusions to interactive audience tricks, this performance will serve as an unforgettable part of any Outer Banks vacation. Seating at the amphitheater is limited, and tickets can be acquired at the Kellogg’s Supply / The Cottage Shop on 1201 Duck Road (directly across from the Town Park) starting on Monday at 7:30 a.m. A maximum of six tickets can be acquired by a single individual for the show. Red Wolf Howling-Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge


There are a lot of wild residents that are found within the vast Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, and one of the most unique species is the local endangered red wolves. At this session, an experienced guide will explain the local wolf population through a brief presentation, and then will take visitors out to the heart of the refuge to listen to the not-so-distance sounds of the red wolves at play. A flashlight, head lamp, and bug spray will come in handy for this nighttime trek, and kids 12 and under are free to attend. (Adults are $10 per person.) Enjoy this unique opportunity to listen to the sounds of one of the Outer Banks’ most remarkable and endangered species, while exploring a cool and barely-inland portion of the coastal landscape.

OBX Ladies Night


Have a girls’ night out with lots of dancing, drinks, and great company at this weekly summertime Ladies Night that’s held at the Brewing Station – one of the central Outer Banks’ favorite destinations for summer fun. A local DJ will provide the dancing music, and all while guys will need to pony up a small cover charge, all ladies are free to join in the fun. Known as a local tradition, this hopping Wednesday party is always one of the hottest nights of the week.

Children’s Show


Treat the youngest members of your vacationing party to a world-class morning of theater during this limited-run show that transforms a classic Hans Christian Andersen story into an entertaining and fully unique performance. Performed by the Grey Seal Puppets organization, a famed company that has received such honors as the President’s Award from the Puppeteers of America, and the Award for Leadership in Theatre from the NC Theatre, this interactive performance will engross kids with its new take on the tale of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” With opportunities for the audience to participate, and rich pageantry and puppet design that will impress young and old attendees alike, this one-of-a-kind event is not to be missed by theater lovers of all ages.

Wet & Wild Wednesday


The stunning Elizabethan Gardens sparkle just a little bit more when water is involved, and this weekly summertime event will be a blast for kids, thanks to an assortment of water sprinklers, squirt toys, a fully loaded water cannon, and many more cool-down activities that will keep everyone smiling. Swimsuits are recommended, as visitors are all but guaranteed to get wet, and sunscreen and towels will come in handy as well for this splash-worthy afternoon of entertainment. In addition to the water fun, kids will also enjoy a brief outside-the-classroom lesson, a free snack, and a chance to hone their gardening skills by potting a take-home plant. Educational and refreshing, this regular event serves as a cool new way to enjoy the Elizabethan Gardens.

Native American Traditions: Tattooing


Tattooing and body painting have been an integral part of different Native American cultures for centuries, and this unique presentation will outline the meanings and stories behind the world of different colors, styles and designs that are used for special ceremonial traditions, enhancing personal power, honoring a loved one, and much more. As attendees learn the meaning behind the different designs, they’ll also have the chance to make their own personal (temporary) tattoo of special, personal significance. Educational and fun for visitors of all ages, this weekly presentation is free with admission to the Frisco Native American Museum.

Fiber Arts Workshop
