The preserve, administered by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy, is a unique habitat and home to over 300 plant species, some of which are classified as rare. During the spring and summer wooly beach heather, water violets and the southern tway-blade orchid can be found in bloom. Over 50 species of birds breed in Nags Head Woods, and several species of reptiles, amphibians and mammals make their home there.
Visitors to the preserve can explore Nags Head Woods on one of six different hiking trails that vary in length and difficulty. Because of the fragile nature of the Nags Head Woods environment, please to not wander off the trails. Wear appropriate footwear when hiking. Dogs and bicycles are not allowed on the trails, but are allowed on Nags Head Woods Road.
